Federal Employment Attorney in Maryland
Representing Maryland Federal Employees in Discrimination, Retaliation & Adverse Action Claims
Maryland is home to roughly 140,000 federal civilian workers, employed at agencies ranging from the National Security Agency at Fort Meade to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and the Social Security Administration headquarters in Woodlawn. When those employees face discrimination, retaliation, or an unjust personnel action, the path forward looks very different from what a private-sector worker would follow. Federal employment law runs on its own procedural track, governed by federal statutes and administrative bodies that most Maryland employment attorneys rarely touch.
At The Law Office of Andrew M. Dansicker, we represent individuals facing unfair treatment in the workplace across Maryland, including federal government employees navigating this distinct legal framework. We handle matters through negotiation and, when necessary, by filing complaints and lawsuits with the relevant state and federal agencies and courts.
If you’re a federal employee dealing with a workplace dispute, don’t wait to get guidance. Call us at (410) 213-3392 to discuss your situation.
Why Federal Employees Follow a Different Legal Path
Private-sector workers in Maryland who face workplace discrimination can file a charge directly with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Federal employees can’t. Instead, federal workers are covered by a separate body of law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (which covers disability discrimination), and the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Claims under Title VII and the Rehabilitation Act must move through each agency’s internal administrative process before they can reach federal court. The Equal Pay Act works differently: federal employees generally have the right to bring suit directly in federal court without completing that internal process first.
Maryland’s anti-discrimination law generally requires an employer to have 15 or more employees before its protections apply, a threshold that doesn’t apply to federal employees. Federal workers at any agency, regardless of size, are protected under federal law. That distinction matters when you’re deciding where to bring a claim and what remedies are available to you.
Federal Court Experience That Applies to Where These Cases Land
When administrative remedies don’t resolve a federal employment dispute, the claim can proceed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and, from there, potentially to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Our attorneys are admitted to practice before both courts and have litigated employment cases in Maryland’s federal and state courts, including claims involving sexual harassment, racial discrimination, age discrimination, national origin discrimination, and wrongful termination.
We’ve also handled employment matters from both sides of the table, representing employees and employers alike. That experience shapes how we approach negotiations and case assessments. Our professional relationships with defense and in-house counsel across Maryland strengthen our ability to advocate effectively when settlement discussions are on the table.
